CT22A and 22B (Made by Landis & Gyr)
The CT 22A, manufactured by Landis & Gyr, was a British pay-on-answer telephone designed primarily for private or institutional use rather than widespread public deployment. Introduced in the 1960s, it required a Subscriber’s Private Meter (SPM) and a reliable signalling earth, which made it suitable for controlled environments such as offices, hospitals, and industrial facilities rather than open street kiosks. The 22A was part of a series that included the 22B, both using similar internal coin mechanisms and designed with robust construction typical of Landis & Gyr engineering. While it functioned similarly to public CTs like the No. 705 or 735, its electrical requirements meant it was not widely used in general public infrastructure. The 22A was eventually made obsolete during the 1980s as British Telecom moved toward electronic push-button telephones and card-operated systems, including optical cardphones also produced by Landis & Gyr. These newer technologies offered simpler maintenance, improved fraud resistance, and did not require the complex coin-signal infrastructure of the 22A.
