| CT25A- Payphone 500 The Payphone 500, officially known as CT No. 25A, was introduced by British Telecom in the mid-1980s and manufactured by Landis & Gyr. It was designed for high-traffic locations such as conference centers, hotels, hospitals, and sports venues. The phone accepted a wide range of coins including 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, and £1, with a cash box capacity of up to £150. It featured a visual display showing minimum charges, remaining credit, and refunds due, and allowed users to insert up to 15 coins in advance without interrupting the call. Unused coins were automatically returned when the handset was replaced. For security, it had a large lockable cash compartment. The Payphone 500 supported local, national, international, emergency (999), and operator calls. It also included an inductive coupler to assist hearing aid users. Available in various colour schemes like brown, stone/brown, and yellow/black, the Payphone 500 was phased out in the early 2000s as British Telecom moved toward newer card-operated and digital payphones. |
