| BARREL CARCASE WITH ASSOCIATED HANDSET: In addition to the fixed transmitter and bell receiver varieties, another well known variation in use in major: pay stations was that which utilised a ‘barrel’ carcass with blank door, in association with a table telephone. Although this variation was used as early as the 1930’s it was not until the early 1960 1 s when bell receivers and solid back transmitters were in short supply, that these combinations were used :n quantity. Earliest examples used a ‘pyramid’ 162 type table set (Fig.11) progressing through the introduction of 300, 400 and 800 table sets. Figs. 11 and 12 feature automatic unit fee mechanisms (short and long barrels) with 52 and 300 type table telephones – two pence operation: These public telephones were usually used on both type cabinets (see Fig.1 Public Telephone Cabinets) in Post Offices. Other locations, especially on private property, were specially built as in Fig.20. Source- (with thanks to) History of the telephone in New South Wales / by Jim Bateman [Croydon, N.S.W.] : J.
