Development of the VT coin collector with desk handset

BARREL CARCASE WITH ASSOCIATED HANDSET: In addition to the fixed transmitter and
bell receiver varieties, another well known variation in use in major: pay stations
was that which utilised a ‘barrel’ carcass with blank door, in association with a
table telephone. Although this variation was used as early as the 1930’s it was
not until the early 1960 1 s when bell receivers and solid back transmitters were in
short supply, that these combinations were used :n quantity. Earliest examples used
a ‘pyramid’ 162 type table set (Fig.11) progressing through the introduction of 300,
400 and 800 table sets.

Figs. 11 and 12 feature automatic unit fee mechanisms (short and long barrels) with
52 and 300 type table telephones – two pence operation: These public telephones
were usually used on both type cabinets (see Fig.1 Public Telephone Cabinets) in
Post Offices. Other locations, especially on private property, were specially
built as in Fig.20.
