2026- The number of public payphones across the UK has dropped from a peak of around 92,000 to under 20,000 today.
Operational payphones that stay in service are being converted from analogue copper connections to digital Voice over IP (VoIP) lines. Under Ofcom rules, any digital payphone must be fitted with battery back-up power so emergency calling remains functional during local power outages.
