The Australian PMG experimented with importing some American equipment before they started using British and locally designed items. This was short lived and rare.

NotesBy around 1912, the need for a more efficient public telephone system led to the introduction of Australia’s first dedicated public telephone. This was an Automatic Electric model, closely resembling the Telephone No. 31, though notably the dial was rendered inoperative. Calls were still manually connected by an operator. Each coin, upon being inserted, would strike a gong within the coin tin, creating a distinctive tone heard by the operator to confirm payment. This marked a key transitional moment between the era of full operator control and future automatic services
