The Gray 11 Pay Station was a later development by William Gray, notable for its three-slot coin mechanism, typically accepting different denominations. It was an important development in terms of mechanism and it was the clear ancestor of the iconic three-slot (to be developed just a few years later). Like other Gray pay stations, it was a coin-control device rather than a complete telephone, designed to be mounted on a compatible timber wall phone made by others. The multiple coin slots improved pricing flexibility and accounting accuracy, supporting wider commercial adoption of payphones in hotels, stations, and public buildings
