Development of the Telmex LADATEL LG Payphone 600
The Landis & Gyr Payphone 600 was one of the most successful electronic coin operated public telephones of the late twentieth century. Developed by the Swiss company Landis & Gyr, the design was first introduced in the United Kingdom during the early 1980s as British Telecom’s CT24A Payphone 600. Its robust stainless-steel housing, microprocessor-controlled electronics and modular construction made it highly reliable and easy to maintain, leading to its adoption in several countries.
This Mexican version was supplied to Teléfonos de México (Telmex) during the extensive modernisation of the country’s public telephone network following the privatisation of Telmex in the early 1990s. Externally, it retained the characteristic Payphone 600 appearance but was adapted specifically for Mexican use. Modifications included Spanish-language instructions, acceptance of Nuevo Peso coinage, Telmex branding and programming to support Mexico’s LADA long-distance dialling system.
