Development of the 120A Fortress
| The AE 120 payphone series was a rugged, single-slot “Fortress” coin telephone platform developed by Automatic Electric (later part of GTE) and manufactured from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. It represented a decisive break from earlier multi-slot payphones, which had become mechanically complex and costly to adapt to rising tariffs, Touch-Tone service, and fraud control. The AE 120A was the earlier type with the rotary dial. The Model 120 (including 120A, 120B, and later variants) used a single-slot coin system with a highly advanced mechanical rejector. Coins were sequentially tested for size, weight, thickness, metallic composition, magnetic response, and slug resistance using permanent magnets, deflectors, and timing gates. Accepted coins triggered denomination-specific switches feeding an early solid-state “totalizer” implemented across multiple printed-circuit boards, replacing older electromechanical counting methods. This system generated precise electrical pulse counts, muted audio during signalling, and enforced minimum deposits before call completion. Internally strap-configured, the AE 120 could operate in coin-first, dial-tone-first, post-pay, or semi-postpay modes, supporting both rotary and Touch-Tone dialing and easing transition across different central office types. The deep-drawn steel housing, modular subassemblies, enlarged coin vault, and high-security locking bars made it exceptionally durable in public environments. Widely deployed across former GTE territories in the United States and parts of Canada, the AE 120 later saw adaptation for private payphone use following industry deregulation and the divestiture of Automatic Electric’s payphone business after its sale to AT&T. Today, it is valued by collectors for its mechanical sophistication, robustness, and adaptability to modern systems via external controllers. |
