L.M. Ericsson Coin Collector
This early Swedish Ericsson coin-collecting box illustrates the origins of operator-controlled public telephone charging. Marked “Telefonautomat – Afgift 10 öre” (automatic telephone – charge 10 öre), it was used in conjunction with a telephone rather than being a complete payphone itself. After making the connection, the caller deposited the required coins, allowing the operator to verify payment. Ericsson exported closely related mechanisms internationally. A particularly similar design appeared in Britain as the GPO Coin Collecting Box No. 1/1A, manufactured by L. M. Ericsson and introduced around the early 1900s. The British version accepted pennies and likewise relied on operator-controlled charging.
