Swedish Phonebooth- 1950s Steel street cabinet

This simplified Swedish telephone kiosk was developed by Telestyrelsen during the mid-1930s and introduced around 1934. Constructed from sheet steel, it replaced the elaborate Pagoden with a cleaner, more functional form, although the open latticework around its base retained a visual link with the earlier design. Engineer Ewald Arvidsson oversaw its development, while artist Eric H. Olson devised nine contrasting colour schemes for different settings, always using a black roof. Later examples were repainted in Televerket’s distinctive Teleorange, adopted in 1959. Surviving kiosks can be seen at Skansen and Brandalsund, and a related 1961-specification example is preserved by Tekniska museet.
