GNT AY-2 Multi-Coin Payphone — Norway, c.1970s–80s
This GNT AY-2 is a Norwegian-network version of the robust multi-coin payphone manufactured by GNT Automatic A/S of Denmark. The crowned lightning-bolt emblem identifies it as equipment operated by Televerket, Norway’s former state telecommunications authority.
Unlike later AY-2 variants fitted with push-button keypads, this example retains a rotary dial for pulse dialling. The Norwegian instructions reveal its operating sequence: lift the handset, wait for the dial tone, place one or more coins in the chute as required, and then dial the telephone number. It accepted Norwegian one-krone and five-kroner coins but specifically warned that 50-øre pieces could not be used.
The rectangular painted-steel cabinet was designed for prolonged, unsupervised service in telephone kiosks and other public locations. Its black handset, substantial cradle and protected cable reflect the need for reliability and resistance to damage. The upper section contained the telephone and coin-validation mechanisms, while the large lower compartment securely stored accepted coins for later collection. The projecting control below the Televerket emblem was associated with coin handling or return.
This example demonstrates how GNT adapted a common Scandinavian payphone platform to individual national requirements. Norwegian operating instructions, currency recognition and Televerket branding distinguished it from related Danish and Swedish versions while preserving the same durable AY-2 cabinet.
