GNT AY2-09234 Multi-Coin Payphone — Norway, 1985
The GNT AY2-09234 was a Danish-manufactured multi-coin payphone supplied for use on Norway’s public telephone network. This particular example is preserved by the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology, whose catalogue dates its production to 1985 and identifies GNT Automatic as the manufacturer.
Although made in Denmark, the telephone carries the crowned lightning-bolt emblem of Televerket, Norway’s state telecommunications authority. The metal fitting above the cabinet is marked “1 kr,” indicating one of the Norwegian coin denominations accepted by its payment mechanism. “Flermynt,” used in the museum description, means that the telephone could recognise multiple coin denominations rather than requiring a single fixed-value coin.
Its rotary dial is notable because it appeared during the transitional period when push-button telephones were becoming standard. GNT evidently produced AY2 variants with both rotary dials and electronic keypads, allowing the basic coinbox design to suit different exchanges and customer requirements.
The substantial painted-steel cabinet incorporated the telephone mechanism above and a securely locked cash compartment below. An armoured handset cord provided additional resistance to damage and theft. This model demonstrates GNT Automatic’s important role as a Scandinavian supplier: Danish-designed equipment was readily adapted for Norwegian currency, network standards, operator branding and established public telephone kiosks.
