Development of the Tamura payphone

Manufactured in Indonesia by PT INTI under licence from Tamura of Japan, these electronic coin payphones served Telkom’s public telephone network. They featured push-button dialling, an LCD and a separately secured cash compartment. Closely related designs appeared in Taiwan and Brazil, illustrating the international reach of Tamura’s payphone technology.

Tamura of Japan contributed to Indonesia’s public telephone industry through a technology partnership with PT Industri Telekomunikasi Indonesia (PT INTI). INTI’s official history lists Tamura among its equipment partners during 1985–1998. PT INTI manufactured coin-operated public telephones for the national operator, Perumtel, later Telkom, supporting the expansion of public communications. The relationship provided a channel for Japanese telephone technology to enter Indonesian production. Tamura’s presence also extended to cardphones: historical research identifies the DC-31 in Indonesian service. However, available records do not specify the partnership’s starting date, individual licensing arrangements, production quantities or local content of particular models and variants.
