Development of the Taiwan Tongya Type 674 TAW Hotel phone
Manufactured by Tongya Telephone Co., Ltd. for the Directorate General of Telecommunications (DGT). Made under licence from Tamura Japan. Very interesting phone.
Based directly on the red domestic phone made in Japan by Tamura, this became the prototype for the widely used Hotel phone format.
The Taiwanese 674-series coin-operated telephones were based on Japan’s pink 10-yen payphone, introduced in 1959. They share its familiar desktop form, rotary dial and coin slot, combining the appearance of an ordinary telephone with a built-in payment mechanism. The examples shown include the 674 STD and 674 TAW. Installed in shops and other businesses, they allowed customers to make calls while helping proprietors recover telephone costs and earn additional income.
