CHINA TELECOM ALCATEL Payphones

Alcatel payphones formed part of China’s expansion of card-operated public telephone services during the 1990s and early 2000s. These yellow examples carry China Telecom branding, while their manufacturer’s inscriptions identify Shanghai Alcatel Smart Terminal Equipment Co., Ltd. They demonstrate local manufacture under the Alcatel name, rather than simply the importation of finished French telephones.

Alcatel was a major French telecommunications equipment company, supplying telephone exchanges, transmission systems, submarine cables and public telephones internationally. Its Chinese activities extended well beyond payphones: in 2002, it consolidated major operations through Alcatel Shanghai Bell.

The photographed HIC879(2)P/T uses prepaid IC smartcards. Its stainless-steel faceplate incorporates a display, metal keypad and controls for card change, volume, redial, successive calls and display language. Printed instructions explain the calling sequence, while emergency numbers appear beneath the keypad. An armoured handset cord and substantial enclosure suited public use.

Shanghai Alcatel was an important supplier within a competitive domestic industry. A contemporary Chinese manufacturer’s prospectus identified it among five particularly influential IC-card payphone producers. Its development work included public telephone management systems, wireless public phones and multimedia terminals, illustrating how the business developed beyond conventional fixed-line cardphones into broader public communications equipment and services for the Chinese market.

Alcatel Shanghai Bell was a major telecommunications equipment manufacturer based in Shanghai. Its predecessor, Shanghai Bell, was established in 1984 as a Chinese-Belgian joint venture producing digital telephone exchanges. Alcatel subsequently became involved through its acquisition of Belgian telecommunications interests, taking control of the reorganised business in 2002. The company supplied fixed and mobile network infrastructure, broadband equipment and associated services, supporting China’s rapidly expanding telecommunications system. Its activities should be distinguished from Shanghai Alcatel Smart Terminal Equipment, the manufacturer named on these payphones. Following Alcatel’s merger with Lucent, the business became Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, later incorporated into Nokia’s operations.
