CNC China Netcom

China Netcom, identified by the CNC logo and Chinese name 中国网通, was a state-owned telecommunications operator with origins in 1999. It expanded substantially in 2002, combining the original Netcom business, Jitong and China Telecom’s networks in ten northern provinces and municipalities. Its services included fixed-line telephony, public telephones, broadband and data communications, with Beijing among its principal markets. oecd.org

Netcom operated independently until its merger with China Unicom in October 2008; the parent companies completed their consolidation in January 2009. Consequently, these CNC-branded telephones principally represent the early to middle 2000s, although individual installations could have remained operational after the merger. sec.gov

The packaging photographed identifies Luoyang Mudan Communications Co., Ltd. (洛阳牡丹通讯股份有限公司), in Luoyang, Henan, and bears a 2004 manufacturing date. This provides strong evidence that the boxed, angular yellow telephone was supplied by Mudan. It should not automatically be taken as identifying every model shown.

The angular telephone is labelled “smart-card telephone”; its instructions explicitly prohibit ordinary IC cards, indicating a distinct card system. Its controls include card writing, deletion, selection and dialling.
