Usage of the J-070 Tubular cabinets
| The J-070 tubular cabinet was a compact telephone enclosure produced by Jaro Industries around 1980. Constructed with a lightweight tubular aluminium frame and panelled sides, it was designed for both indoor and outdoor payphone installations. The open, semi-enclosed form provided a modest level of privacy while remaining easy to install in busy locations such as streets, shopping centres, and transport hubs. This type of cabinet reflects the later evolution of American payphone infrastructure. By the late twentieth century, many telephone companies were moving away from heavy glass booths toward lighter, modular shelters and cabinets. These structures reduced cost, required less space, and could be installed quickly while still offering some protection from weather and surrounding noise. The J-070 represents this practical shift toward simpler, flexible payphone installations widely used across the United States during the final decades of the public payphone era. |
