Development of the GRAY 50K MULTI-COIN PREPAY THREE SLOT Payphone

The Gray 50K was a three-slot, multi-coin prepay payphone in the Model 50 Bell System series. Using coin-control mechanisms by the Gray Telephone Paystation Company with Western Electric Company components, it required coin deposit before connection, accepted nickels, dimes, and quarters, used internal gongs for signalling, and supported unattended commercial operation in early twentieth-century American networks.
In Gray Model designations, the letter “K” denotes a prepay coin-control variant without a dial.
A 50K required coins to be deposited before the call was connected, but calls were operator-assisted rather than user-dialled. By contrast, suffixes like “G” indicated dial-equipped versions.
