Development of the Gray 8 One-Slot Mounted

The Gray 8 Pay Station Wall Auto was an early American coin-operated payphone developed by William Gray. Mounted on a specified timber wall unit manufactured by others, it marked an important shift in payphone design: the Gray 8 comprised only the coin-control and payment mechanism, rather than a complete telephone. It was intended to be fitted to a compatible wooden wall telephone base manufactured by other suppliers. This modular approach allowed operators to retrofit existing wall phones for paid use, improving flexibility and reducing costs while advancing the commercialisation of public telephony.
