PBritish Cast-Iron “K” Series Kiosk
New Zealand received a small number of British cast-iron kiosks, believed to be examples of the famous British Post Office “K2” series. These may have been presented to New Zealand to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI in 1937 or possibly the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935. Only a handful were installed, generally one per major city. Christchurch’s example stood in Victoria Square and carried a manufacturer’s plate from J. MacFarlane & Co. of Glasgow. These kiosks were never standard New Zealand issue, making them among the rarest public telephone boxes in the country and surviving examples of a rarer early British version of the K series.
