NZ Payphonebooth- Gabled Narrow Kiosk
A photo dating from 1918 showing an early Public Phone Box. They became known as a Public Call Station. This style was current well into the 1930 ‘ s but later versions were not quite a s fancy. The boxes were only 2’ 6″ wide so that they did not block the entire footpath. Tn m any cases they were placed half on the footpath and half out over the kerb and gutter. The narrowness of these phone boxes possibly goes to prove why the little girl had to wait outside.
The Narrow Timber Kiosk dates from at least the early 1920s. Measuring only 2 feet 6 inches (760 mm) wide, it was specifically designed for installation on narrow footpaths without obstructing pedestrians. Many were positioned partially over the gutter to maximise available footpath space. This practical design demonstrates how the Post Office adapted public telephone infrastructure to crowded urban environments while maintaining accessibility.
