Development of COMEX Payphones
| COMEX Telecom Corporation was a Taiwanese manufacturer of electronic public telephones, active mainly during the 1990s and 2000s. Rather than supplying a single national telephone administration, COMEX marketed adaptable, relatively inexpensive payphones to independent operators, telecommunications companies and institutions worldwide. Its range included coin-operated, prepaid-card, combined coin-and-card, fixed-line and later GSM/CDMA models, together with telephone cabinets and remote-management equipment. The company claimed that more than 200,000 COMEX telephones had been installed internationally. Models included the compact CX-200A, CX-331 and the more substantial CX-910 series. These typically incorporated electronic tariff control, programmable free and barred numbers, multilingual displays, armoured handset cords, secure cash boxes and mechanisms configurable for different national coin sets. Some later models could report revenue, faults and operating data to a central computer. COMEX achieved a noticeable presence in South America, especially through private public-telephone operators rather than the traditional state networks. Documentary records confirm that Peru’s Itelecom imported CX-331 and CX-910 coin payphones from Taiwan in 2013, and that the CX-910 received Peruvian telecommunications approval. COMEX instruments also appeared in other developing and deregulated markets where privately operated street phones, shops and locutorion remained important. They were exported beyond Latin America, including to Australia, where the CX-910AL was offered as a replacement for Telstra’s privately operated Bluephones. |
