Brazilian Payphone- Icatel TP 2000

ICATEL’s TPC 2001 and TP-102 MB were Brazilian public telephones accepting prepaid inductive cards. Documented examples date from 1992 and 1997 respectively. Both feature metal cabinets, digital displays and armoured handset cords. The TPC 2001 resembles Britain’s GPT Mercury cardphone, although no manufacturing or licensing connection has yet been established.

Development of Icatel

These Brazilian card payphones were manufactured by ICA Telecomunicações Ltda, trading as ICATEL, for use within the Telebrás system. The TPC 2001, documented from 1992, features a shaped metal cabinet, recessed handset, digital display and card reader. The TP-102 MB, represented by a museum example dated 1997, uses a rectangular enclosure with an externally mounted handset, alphanumeric keypad and volume controls. Both accepted prepaid inductive telephone cards rather than coins or tokens. Although the TPC 2001 resembles Britain’s GPT Mercury cardphone, no documented manufacturing or licensing connection has been established. Their similar layouts may reflect common ergonomic and operational requirements.
