Development of the Beken CARD Phone
These Indonesian public telephones carry branding for BeKen, a prepaid calling-card service associated with Telkom. The name combined “Bebas” and “Terkendali”, conveying freedom to telephone while keeping expenditure under control. BeKen users accessed prepaid credit by dialling a service number and entering their card’s PIN, rather than necessarily inserting the card into the telephone. www.tutyqueen.com
The examples shown share a robust wall-mounted cabinet, a vertically cradled handset on the left, and a recessed stainless-steel keypad panel on the right. Twelve round metal buttons provide standard push-button dialling. A large panel above the keypad accommodates operating instructions, advertising or service information, while a separate lower section provides access to equipment or payment-related components.
Surviving examples display different colour schemes, including beige with dark trim and a conspicuous blue-and-yellow finish. Differences in openings and fittings suggest variations in equipment or subsequent modification, although their precise functions remain unconfirmed. Some may incorporate physical card readers, but neither the card technology nor bank-credit-card acceptance has been established.
The cabinet’s general arrangement resembles contemporary GNT equipment from Denmark, making that manufacturer a possible research lead. However, the photographs do not establish a GNT connection, a model designation, manufacturing dates, or whether these telephones were imported or locally produced.
Above- interesting version, am not sure of model info.
