Development of the Card Payphone (CP-09)

CP-09 – Card-Only Phone

The CP-09, closely resembling the Japanese Anritsu FX7003 IC Card Payphone, was one of the more advanced card-only public phones in the Telstra network. It accepted only Telstra-branded phonecards and included features such as volume control, redial, memory storage, and a follow-on call button—making it a versatile unit for the time.

Internally, the phone contained vertically mounted circuit boards inserted into sockets at the rear. The card reader was housed in the same distinctive black plastic casing as found in the CT3c model. Beneath the reader, a small container collected the punched chads from inserted cards. If this container was removed, the phone automatically reported its absence via DPMS (Data Phone Management System), ensuring security and accountability.

The CP-09 required a 21V AC power supply and was also available in a TTY-compatible variation for hearing-impaired users. These versions included a stainless steel drawer mounted below the unit, containing a keyboard for teletype functionality. They were commonly installed in major urban areas.
