GNT 502 coin payphone — Denmark, 1992
Manufactured in Denmark by GNT Automatic A/S, the GNT 502 was supplied to OTE as part of its early-1990s programme to replace coin telephones with prepaid cardphones. Introduced alongside OTE’s chip-based Tilekarta system in 1992, the sets were installed nationwide in streets, transport terminals, hospitals, military camps and remote island communities. Their electronic card readers reduced coin handling, theft and collection costs, while displays showed the caller’s remaining credit. The OTE contract was a substantial export order for GNT, supporting national deployment.
