Swedish Payphone- GNT 502 Telematic

The GN Telematic GNT 203 was a Danish electronic three-coin payphone used by Sweden’s Televerket from the late 1980s. It accepted 50 öre, 1-krona and 5-krona coins. Its robust modular cabinet also influenced GN’s GNT 807 cardphone, reportedly manufactured under licence by Telkor in South Africa from around 1988.

GNT 502 Telematic payphone — Denmark/Sweden, c. late 1980s

The GNT 502 was a robust electronic coin-operated telephone manufactured in Denmark by GN Telematic, part of the long-established Great Northern Telegraph group. Introduced around 1990, it was supplied to Scandinavian telephone administrations, including the Danish P&T and Sweden’s state-owned Televerket. The Swedish Technical Museum identifies its example as type KTAS, approved for use on the Televerket network.

The telephone’s strongly functional design combines a heavy handset, armoured cord and metal-faced controls within a compact, vandal-resistant cabinet. Calls were dialled using a push-button keypad rather than the rotary dials of earlier coin telephones. Coins were inserted through the slot at upper right, while the small window displayed charging or operating information. The broad central panel carried user instructions, and the rectangular control at lower right appears to have operated the coin-return mechanism.

Known examples show minor differences according to operator and tariff. A Danish GNT 502 bears P&T Teleinspektionen approval and a tariff strip listing 1, 2, 5 and 10 kroner, while Swedish examples carry the Televerket emblem. The model represents the final mature generation of Scandinavian coin payphones before stored-value cards and mobile telephones displaced cash operation. Sweden’s coin-payphone service, which had begun in 1901, ultimately ended in 2015.

The model belonged to a wider family of GN payphones exported during the transformation of Eastern Europe. GN equipment and variants appeared in Albania, Bulgaria and Romania, as well as other eastern European markets. These countries were modernising public telephone networks after the collapse of communist governments and often purchased Western equipment rather than developing new systems. GN’s rugged, adaptable design could be configured for different coins, tariffs, languages and telephone networks, making it suitable for these export programmes.

Surviving examples carry different operator badges and tariff panels. They illustrate how one Danish design was adapted for several national markets during the final era of coin-operated public telephony.
