Brazilian Payphone-  LM Ericsson payphones

L.M. Ericsson’s Brazilian payphones adapted Swedish DMT designs for telephone tokens. Their sturdy metal cabinets housed rotary dials, payment mechanisms and separately locked cash compartments. Comparable examples were manufactured by Ericsson do Brasil, following the establishment of local production in 1955, bringing Swedish telephone engineering into Brazil’s growing telecommunications industry.

Development of the LM Ericsson payphone in Brazil

L.M. Ericsson’s Brazilian token payphones belonged to the same broad design tradition as its Swedish DMT 141–143 series. Their tall metal cabinets, separately locked equipment and cash compartments, side-mounted handsets and rotary dials reflect a shared approach to durable public telephone construction. The photographed Brazilian example bears the marking DMT 01401/25; a related museum specimen is catalogued as DMT 01402/25/8. The exact correspondence with Swedish model numbers remains unconfirmed. acervo.institutofuturos.org.br

Ericsson initially supplied Brazil with imported Swedish telecommunications equipment. Following government pressure to reduce imports, the company established Brazilian manufacturing in 1955. www.ericsson.com

Adapted for Brazilian telephone tokens, or fichas, these instruments charged calls in successive periods, prompting users to insert another token when required. Their significance lay in transferring established Ericsson technology into local production and supporting Brazil’s expanding public telephone services.
